Help for the Proceedings CD
This CD contains HTML and PDF
(Portable Document Format) files for all papers in the Eurocrypt and
Crypto proceedings from 1981-1997. The HTML files contain links to
the PDF files, in order to allow for easy navigation. In order to
display the PDF files, you will need a plugin or "helper application"
for your browser that is capable of displaying and/or printing PDF.
PDF is a publicly specified document format, and software to read PDF
can be implemented by anyone who understands the specification. There
are currently several free software packages that are available for
this task, including:
- Adobe Acrobat Reader, from
Adobe Systems. This is probably the best of the lot, and can be
downloaded over the Internet directly from Adobe.
- xpdf, available
on Unix platforms running the X window system.
- ghostscript. This can
convert PDF to postscript, and is available for most platforms.
- GSview
allows you to display PDF. It uses ghostscript, and runs on most platforms.
- pdfprint.
This only allows printing of documents, and requires PERL to run.
Further information on PDF software may be found at the
PDFzone web site.
Known problems
- Version 3.0 of the Adobe Acrobat Reader only allows you to have 9
documents open simultaneously. Once you try to open a tenth document,
the reader notifies you that you have to close some documents before
opening another. Unfortunately, if your Reader is running as a
plugin, there is no way to do this and the only solution is to close
the reader. If you close the Adobe reader Window (it is generally hidden),
then this will suffice. Adobe has also supplied a plugin called the
"AutoClose plug-in" that should solve this problem.
You can download
it from Adobe.
- If you are using the Adobe Acrobat reader, be sure to check the
"shrink to fit" button on the dialog for printing. Otherwise the papers
will not fit on the page. In addition, the files will be more legible on
the screen if under "File->Preferences->General", you check the box marked
"Smooth Text and Images".
- On Windows 95/98/NT, the autorun facility sometimes leaves an MSDOS
window open on the screen. You should simply close this.
- The current version of Acrobat reader on Linux sometimes does not work
as a plugin for Netscape due to libc incompatibilities. This can be fixed
by upgrading to Netscape 4.05 or later, or using a matching version of libc.
- The Java applet for searching has it's own
problems and may not work on your computer.
If we discover any errors, updates, or workarounds for using this CD
will appear on the web at the IACR
web site.
